Matthew Shadley Band

1970 Something

The Matthew Shadley Band has completed its 2nd LP in less than one year. Following on the heels of Emerald, its first album in 14 years, 1970 Something is scheduled for release on July 10, 2023 and features 8 new songs written by Matthew Shadley Brauer, as well as two cover songs  (by Big Star and Steely Dan).

The band originated in 2003 in Cincinnati, Ohio, where it gained accolades as “Cincinnati’s live show specialists” (Jan Perry, Cincinnati Post). The band went on hiatus in 2008, but the moniker was resurrected by Brauer, the band’s primary content creator, during the COVID lockdowns of 2020.

From his recording studio on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the multi-instrumentalist has produced a new album that is reminiscent of the 1970s. Like 2022’s Emerald, the album was recorded with Brauer playing the majority of the instruments along with additional support from well-known studio musicians (including Kenny Aronoff, Mauricio Herrera, Norman Garschke, Darby Todd, Mat Hector, and Rikard Ford).

The songs move seamlessly from psychedelic, borderline prog-rock instrumentals (“Panorama” and "Intrigue at the Disco") to hard-rocking power pop (“Believe,” “I’m Alright,” "Long Ride," and “Don’t Need a Reason Why”) to the hard-to-categorize ("Hashtag World"). The music relies heavily on the archetypal staples of classic rock: tube amplifiers, overdriven guitar solos, funky rhythms, vintage keyboards, and layered harmony vocals.

“My vision for this project was to pay homage to some of the best aspects of 70s rock and roll, while remaining recognizable to the current times,” says Brauer. “I believe this album has a harder edge to it, which keeps it from being anachronistic.”

The album is distributed by CD Baby and will be available on all major streaming platforms. Fans can purchase the album as lossless digital files, compact disc, and vinyl from the band’s website at www.matthewshadleyband.com.
